Announcements in Canvas help an instructor reach their entire class at once. This resource allows you to disseminate important information more quickly to your students.

Creating Announcements

In Course Navigation, click the Announcements link.

Click the Add Announcement button.

Type a title for the announcement in the topic title field [1] and add content in the Rich Content Editor [2]. You can also add links, files, and images to the announcement using the content selector [3].

Note: The Rich Content Editor includes a word count display below the bottom right corner of the text box. View the Using the Rich Content Editor instructions for more information on the Rich Content Editor.

Other Announcement Options

You can add an attachment to your announcement by clicking the Choose File button [1].

In the Options section, you can select various options for your announcement. You can delay the posting of your announcement [2], which allows you to schedule the announcement for a future date.

Additionally, you can allow users to comment on the announcement [3] and require students to reply to a post before seeing other replies [4].

You can also enable an announcement podcast feed [5] and allow students to like announcement replies [6].

Click the Save button.

Note: Unless you are using the delay posting option in Announcements, once you click Save, your announcement will immediately be posted in your course.

Recording a Video Announcement

From your announcement text editor, choose the More External Tools option, then choose ARC.

More External Tools

Arc

Allows recording, uploading, and embedding video.

Allows uploading and embedding of existing video.

  1. If you’ve previously recorded a video using ARC, you can choose it from the Videos Pane.

  2. If you need to record your video, choose RECORD.

  3. If you already have a video file to upload, click ADD+.

Recording

You can choose to Screen Capture or Webcam Capture. If you need to submit a video or audio of yourself, please choose Webcam Capture.

A warning may appear asking for the use of your webcam and microphone. Choose Allow.

Choose Start Recording. A countdown timer will appear; after the countdown, begin your recording.

Record your video or audio. Choose Finish when complete, or Start Over to begin again.

After you click Finish, you can set a title on your video. Click Save when finished.

Your video will appear in the Video Pane (#3 above). Click the video then choose Embed.

Note: Do not copy/paste an announcement that contains media elements (images, videos, etc..)  from class to class. The class receiving the “pasted” material will not have access to the media element. You will need to create a new announcement and re-insert your media element. If the element is a video, use the process outlined above to “re-use” your video from the Video Pane.

Note 2: Launch students are comprised of several internal and external districts to Springfield Public Schools. Most districts have blocks put in place to prevent students from accessing certain material (YouTube, Vimeo, etc…). It is important to remember that this method of inserting a video is allowed by all partner districts.
