Recording Media for Assignments - Canvas

You may have an assignment that requires you to record your screen or yourself - audio or video (or both). Use the following instructions to create a recording and submit your file(s) to Canvas.

NOTE:  To submit audio recordings, you will need to have a microphone. If you are also recording video of yourself, you will need a webcam.

 

Chromebook - Screen Capture

To record your screen:

  1. On your Chromebook, click on the time in the bottom right corner of your screen. This will bring up the Quick Settings menu. Click on the Screen capture option.

  2. To record a video of your screen, select the video camera icon.

  3. Adjust your options (to record your whole screen or only part of your screen, to include audio or not, etc.), then click or drag to start the recording. The program will count down before starting, and the Record icon will appear at the bottom of the screen. recordstop.png

  4. When you are finished recording, click the Record icon at the bottom of the screen. recordstop.png

  5. For assignments:

    1. On your Canvas assignment, click the Start Assignment button near the top.

    2. In the File Upload section, choose the Upload File button. Your recording will be located in your Downloads folder.

    3. Once you have selected your recording, click on the Submit Assignment button.

  6. For text entry boxes and discussion replies:

    1. In the Record/Upload Media menu, select Upload/Record Media.

    2. Drag your file here to upload, or navigate to the file on your device. Your recording will be located in your Downloads folder.

    3. Click the Submit button.

       

Chromebook - Webcam Capture

To create a video using your webcam:

  1. Navigate to the Camera app on your Chromebook.

  2. Go to Settings to adjust your options as needed.

  3. To start your video recording, choose Video, then the Record button.

  4. To stop your recording, click on the Record button again.

  5. For assignments:

    1. On your Canvas assignment, click the Start Assignment button near the top.

    2. In the File Upload section, choose the Upload File button. Your recording might either be located in your My files > Camera folder or your Downloads folder.

    3. Once you have selected your recording, click on the Submit Assignment button.

  6. For text entry boxes and discussion replies:

    1. In the Record/Upload Media menu, select Upload/Record Media.

    2. Drag your file here to upload, or navigate to the file on your device. Your recording might either be located in your My files > Camera folder or your Downloads folder.

    3. Click the Submit button.

Text Entry/Discussion Response - Using Canvas Studio

In your text editor, choose the Plug icon, then choose Canvas Studio.

  1. If you’ve previously recorded a video using Canvas Studio, you can choose it from the Library [1].

  2. If you need to record your video, choose RECORD [2].

  3. If you already have a video file to upload, click ADD+ [3].

Recording

You can choose to Screen Capture or Webcam Capture. If you need to submit a video or audio of yourself, please choose Webcam Capture.

A warning may appear asking for the use of your webcam and microphone. Choose Allow.


Choose Start Recording. A countdown timer will appear; after the countdown, begin your recording.

Record your video or audio. Choose Finish when complete, or Start Over to begin again.

After you click Finish, you can set a title on your video. Click Save when finished.

Your video will appear in the Video Pane (#1 above). Click the video then choose Embed.

Record/Upload Media

Allows recording of audio or video file from microphone or webcam. 

In the pop-up window you will see two options.  You can either select the Computer tab to upload a file that you have already recorded or you can create a new recording by selecting the Record tab.

Record Media

If you choose to record your own media, select the Record tab.  You can choose to record audio only by clicking the Mic button or you can choose to record audio and video by clicking the Webcam button.  Once you have selected the appropriate option, click the Allow button in the “Use your device” settings window.


Begin Recording

When you are ready to begin recording, click the Start Recording button.  Your recording will begin after a 3-second countdown. If you need to start your recording over, click the Start Over button. When you are done recording, just click the Finish button.

Note:  If you are recording audio & video, you should see a preview of your webcam image while you record.

 

When you are done recording, preview your recording to make sure you are happy with the result. Give your recording a proper title then click the Save button. 

 

Submitting Media Recording Directly to an Assignment

If your Canvas assignment allows the option for a direct media recording submission, you can begin by clicking the Start Assignment button in the top right corner of the assignment.

Scroll down to the submission type window and click the Media [1] tab then click the Record/Upload Media [2] button.

In the pop-up window you will see two options.  You can either select the Upload Media tab to upload a file that you have already recorded or you can create a new recording by selecting the Record Media tab (this tab is selected by default).

If you choose to record your own media, select the Record Media tab.  You can choose to record audio only by clicking the Mic button or you can choose to record audio and video by clicking the Webcam button.  Once you have selected the appropriate option, click the Allow button in the “Use your device” settings window.
